The latest edition of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) was published on 27 November 2019. The index ranks small areas in Wales on several types of deprivation, like income and health, and combines these into an overall measure of multiple deprivation.

Last month we told you about the work we’ve been doing to improve access to data on energy efficiency of homes, including the publication of a new dashboard using information on energy performance certificates. December 2022 saw the first release of data about the Welsh language from Census 2021. This showed that the number of Welsh speakers had fallen to 538,300. This contrasted with some other sources which suggested figures had been rising.

Digital is now a fundamental aspect of our daily lives – used for entertainment and leisure activities, in work and education, for keeping in touch with family and friends and accessing important public services. Many of us benefit from being able to use digital tools and technology confidently, however as the pace of change in digital technology increases, there is risk that more people will remain or become digitally excluded. Digital exclusion is experienced by people who do not have access, skills, confidence, or motivation to use the internet or digital tools.

In my last blog, I mentioned how LoRaWAN is revolutionising how sensing is done and, since then, it’s been incredible to witness LoRaWAN adoption increasing at pace.
For example, a major water utility company is investing in 5000 LoRaWAN gateways and 3 million sensors that will be retrofitted to existing water meters, and combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI), will improve detection of leaks and optimise the water network.
