We recently blogged about Welsh Government recruiting to Digital, Data and Technology roles and how we want to increase our internal skills and capability in these areas. As part of this recruitment we recently hired a new Developer to the Corporate Digital Team and we’re really excited to welcome him to the organisation. Ok, unlike the blog title suggests, we’re not going to fire him just yet – but what better way to get to know him than to throw some quick fire questions at him?!
What did you do before you joined Welsh Government?
I was a front-end developer for a travel technology company in Cardiff. I was building the front end of their e-commerce holiday website and the most recent work I’d been doing was on a ski website.
Why did you join Welsh Government?
I wanted a change of scenery and wanted to expand my skills – coding with different technologies and languages which is always good for the CV! I didn’t know much about Welsh Government as an organisation before I joined and the work is a lot more varied than I thought. I had expected to just be working on Welsh Government’s gov.wales website but I’ve been getting involved with other Welsh Government websites too.
What have you been working on so far?
I’ve been fixing bugs with the Beta gov.wales website and also developing a new website for Care Inspectorate Wales (formerly known as CSSIW).
What’s been the most interesting thing you’ve worked on?
Developing the gov.wales website and making it more accessible for people. I hadn’t done much work around accessibility in my previous job so it’s been interesting to get involved with that work and think about how people who are visually impaired or use screen readers might access our site.
What advice would you give someone wanting to work in this area?
You have to be willing to learn and to take ownership of your own learning and development, whether that’s reading tutorials or following industry leads on Twitter to get updates.
What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
Always be willing to learn and never stop learning, especially as the web industry is always evolving so you need to stay on top of any changes or improvements.
If you weren’t a developer what would you be?
A Park Ranger with no technology and completely self sufficient – the opposite to what I am now!
You’re a new addition to the crayon box – what colour would you be and why?
I’d be Bluebird Blue for Cardiff City
What three things would you take on a desert island?
Bear Grills, that’s the survival bit covered. A life raft and a keg of beer!
What’s on your bucket list?
I don’t really have one, but I do want to run a marathon some day……. And to see Wales play football at a World Cup!
So that’s a brief introduction to our new Developer. We will be featuring blogs from some of our other staff in Welsh Government over the coming months to give you a flavour of what it’s like to work for Welsh Government and the variation of work for people in the Digital, Data and Technology profession to get involved with.
